Russel & Green Lantern Speak on Obama Mixtape
The two have been putting in calls to the likes of Common, Q-Tip and Will.I.Am to get original songs for the project. But, according to Green, the mixtape is going to feature 50 percent new material and 50 percent of his remixing. They're aiming to finish the project before next month's HSAN summit in Pennsylvania.
"I'm having a field day with these Obama speeches," Green explained. "I actually got joints where I'll make a beat, I'll get somebody to sing a hook, and where there's supposed to be verses, it's just straight speeches. I played one for my mother, and she started crying. So it's gonna be inspiring, but then on the street side, it's just gonna be some descriptions of life on the street, but not any of the thuggery."

Remy Martin Found Guilty
In other Rappers going to jail news...
Remy took her case to the Jury and was found guilty on 4 of 9 counts. Two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion, and criminal possession of a weapon. Remy was not found guilty of gang assault and witness tampering. Apparently the victims family TAUNTED Remy after the sentence was revealed. She is looking at a cool 25 years in prison. Remy was cuffed and escorted out of the court screaming “Oh my God!”

T.I. Has Pleaded Guilty to Weapons Charges
The 27-year-old singer, whose real name is Clifford Harris, was expected to be sentenced to 1,500 hours of community service talking to youth groups around the country, followed by about 12 months in prison, according to two people familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plea deal had not been finalized yet Thursday morning.
Damn... He got a great deal considering what he faced:
He was charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers, as well as possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
Nothing is final yet, so if any changes are announced, I will surely edit the post.
UPDATE:
TIP is to serve one year and one day in prison, perform 1000 hours community service and pay a $100,000 fine. The sentence of over 1 year makes him eligible for %15 reduction in time for good behavior. He will be sentenced March 27th 2009 and likley start his prison term then. HOWEVER, if he fails to abide by these terms, and fails to show responsibility for his actions, he may end up sentenced to 97 Months (8 years + Change) in jail.

Q-Tip interview in Filter Magazine
Filter Magazine's newest issue just hit the stands. The cover man for ya'll DEDheads out there is none other than Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. The interview wit the Abstract covers a few different bases. He talks about Tribe, and also the current state of music and Hip-Hop in particular..it's a REALLY good interview. Pick up a copy. GOOD READ. There's some commentary afterward too from some good friends of the Tribe.
Here's what Talib Kweli had to say:
"I loved hip-hop but I wasn't dressing or talking like the rest of the kids in my school. Q-Tip provided me with a template of how I could be myself. I was 14 and thought I was in Native Tongues. I had a VHS of Tribe live in Europe. It was incredible; these guys from Queens who I completely related to and were talking directly to me were touring the world.
The first time I saw them was Howard University Homecoming when I was 17......The mainstream media was dismissive of hip-hop; there was still the idea that it wasn't art. Tribe were our saviors for stopping that shit. The music was good, intelligent, clean. Tribe made it easy to defend. Someone says hip-hop is not musical, you say 'What? Listen to Low End Theory. It's got Ron Carter on in.'..."

Kanye - "Good Life" Lawsuit
A wacky songwriter-producer in Maryland says that Kanye West is diggin' his gold, lifting his tune "Volume of Good Life" for the Kanye smash hit "Good Life."
In a rambling lawsuit filed in Maryland District Court, Dayna Staggs (aka D'Mystro) is suing Kanye -- and his record label, Roc-a-Fella -- for copyright infringement. Staggs says that West "didn't obtain a license to use 'Volume of Good Life'" for his tune, and points out that Kanye was "only at the age of 6 or 7 years of age [sic]" when his song was written.
D'Mystro is also peeved because Kanye's song "contains vulgar and offensive" images and "harms the reputation" of his much cleaner song. He wants 85% of all world sales of the proceeds from the music that uses his work, though he doesn't explain how he came up with that number. Kanye's label hasn't returned a message seeking comment.
Good Luck. I've been searching all over for the original song to try and use in a future SOTD. Never heard of it, can't find it.

While we're on Diddy. It appears that the whole LA Times 2pac shooting story that connects Biggie and Puffy to the assualt on Pac, is bunk.

Decided to do it's own investigation. Turns out (according to TSG) that half the FBI documents and eyewitness secret testimony was made up by some kid who needed attention.
Some parts I thought were interesting:
The con man, James Sabatino, 31, has long sought to insinuate himself, after the fact, in a series of important hip-hop events, from Shakur's shooting to the murder of The Notorious B.I.G.. In fact, however, Sabatino was little more than a rap devotee, a wildly impulsive, overweight white kid from Florida whose own father once described him in a letter to a federal judge as "a disturbed young man who needed attention like a drug." Sabatino is pictured in the above mug shot.
And then there's the small matter of Sabatino's whereabouts on March 9, 1997, when Wallace was gunned down while seated in a GMC Suburban outside the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. While he enjoys repeating the "theory" that he mysteriously bailed on a planned meeting with the rapper that fateful night, Sabatino was actually 2400 miles away from the crime scene. He was imprisoned in Miami's Federal Detention Center, where he still had six months to serve on a two-year sentence for separate felony convictions.
Sabatino has frequently claimed to have managed a number of leading hip-hop acts, including Notorious B.I.G., Lords of the Underground, and Heavy D and the Boyz. Du Kelly, a member of Lords of the Underground, described Sabatino as a "scam artist" who briefly tried to befriend the group's manager. Kelly said that he recalled Sabatino as a "short, Caucasian, little chubby fat guy" whose "father was supposed to be Mafia or something." Sabatino was "just a con artist who tried to get close to artists, but he was a nobody," said Kelly. He added that Sabatino also tried to get near the Wu-Tang Clan, "but I heard they beat him up."

There was one arrest at the latest Soulja Boy concert at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. A 12 year-old boy was taken into custody Wednesday night for throwing a rock through the windshield of Soulja Boy's bus. Why? The kid told arresting officers, "I hate Soulja Boy."
Bloomington police used a supervisor and five officers on overtime to provide security for the hip hop concert.

Rick Ross clocked in with 198,000 copies according to Soundscan. That's actually really good for this day and age of album sales.
The Big Boss Dogg Snoop Dogg rang in 137, still pretty nice numbers.
The Elephant in the room who we later found out in the sand only scanned 46,000. And yall know good n well 50 is laughin' his ass off.
But other than this, this is a nice sign, three mainstream artists come out in the same day and we still get numbers like this. Hopefully it can stay like this.

Busta Rhymes Sentenced
Busta Rhymes has been sentenced for assaulting his former driver and a fan after pleading guilty in a deal that puts him on probation for three years and requires him to do 10 days of community service.
The 35-year-old rapper also was fined $1,250, plus court costs, for driving while intoxicated and with a suspended license, and must enroll in a drunken driving program.
Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Larry Stephen warned Rhymes on Tuesday: "If you mess up, you're going to jail."

A music industry manager was charged Monday with sexually assaulting two 16-year-old girls and giving them cocaine.Jeremy Geffen, 35, of West Hollywood was charged with 14 felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, rape of an unconscious person, and furnishing cocaine to a minor, the district attorney's office said.

No Suspects Found in Grand Hustle Shooting
The Cincinnati Police Department refuted claims of suspects being found in the Philant Johnson homicide case.
"There have been no arrests in this case and there are no warrants pending," said Cincinnati Police Public Information Commander Lt. Mark Briede, according to AllHipHop. "We've heard that Atlanta radio is reporting it and we've gotten several calls about this. But we know nothing about it."
Media Liason Fran Cihon further explained that details would be unavailable because the case was under active investigation. "Our investigators don't discuss their investigations unless there is a major development or an arrest. Once a homicide takes place, we do a media release announcing the crime and it's investigation. But we don't do updates on a case, with the exception of situations where information is uncovered that the public could use to help us resolve the case. In those situations, we release that information to the press in hopes of driving up Crimestoppers tips."
Reports from an Atlanta radio station earlier this week stated that Cincinnati police apprehended two suspects, and were close to arresting a third, in the murder of Philant Johnson, a Grand Hustle Records employee.
Johnson was shot on I-75 in Cincinnati following an argument between rapper T.I.'s entourage (of which Johnson was a member) and several unknown individuals at Club Ritz.

You Heard RIGHT! Game has BEEN OUT of Jail.
Kids will believe anything these days...The Game issued a statement on Thursday (March 13) apologizing for all of the confusion over his release from the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles earlier this week. It all started on Monday when website TMZ.com announced that the rapper had been released after serving only eight days of a possible 60 day sentence on a weapons conviction. But later on that afternoon, his manager Jimmy Rosemond issued a statement stating that Game had not in fact been released and was simply being transferred to another jail. When MTV News attempted to get to the bottom of the discrepancy, both Game’s attorney and officials at Twin Towers insisted that he was free.
The Game’s statement read as follows:
“I apologize for the conflicting news on my release, but due to the sensitive negotiations on this matter I felt it appropriate not to give an exact date on my release. I am truly grateful to my attorney, family and management for doing a great job in this respect. Upon my release I went directly to the studio with producers Cool & Dre and recorded several records including my street record ‘Big Dreams.’ Thank you to all my fans as well for the support.”

A Fresh BreakDown - Flo Rida: Mail On Sunday
You gotta admit, yall ain't see this muthafucka comin' with the lil' pop smash "Low". Then he comes back 'round with "Elevators". You may think homie's all pop, but I'm here to tell ya, I've been on this cat for a minute, every since he was Mr. Birthday Man, peep the Khaled hosted mixtape... Ahem! Anyway, this new cat is different from alot of the new pack. Crazy voice, catchy delivery, and a hell of a flow.. Guess why the name Flo Rida fits him. Not to mention his play on the name of his homestate is clever. Anyway..
Since this is a blogg, I can mention whatever the fuck I feel right? Well, this kid is signed to Atlantic Records. They haven't had much poppin' from their rap artists as of late, so do you think we're gonna hear alotta concept come from their new popular guy? Uh.. Hell naw. So I'ma tell ya now, this CD ain't for the backpackers, lol. But if you wanna stunt infront of the club cuz you wanna bump somethin with alotta bass n a nice sound.. You might wanna put this CD in.
Concept.. Well, it ain't much on this CD. But Flo Rida finds a way to squeeze in a concept. In the song "Still Missin' ." He talks about his missin' ho... And it's gonna be some dumb people thinkin' he's actually talkin' 'bout a garden hoe since he says "the rakes still in the shed, but my ho's still missin'." Once again, clever, it ain't jus outta-this-world complexx, but it was clever, I'll give it to 'em. He also has another song talkin' 'bout his girl on "Me & U." The hook sounds like one of them ol' R&B songs in the mid-90s (think Keith Sweat, lol.) But it's nice though. And in "All My Life," it's pretty self explanitory, he's basically talkin' 'bout his up-bringin'. Nothin' to special. And my personal favorite track, "Ms. HangOver," he uses alcohol bottles to describe a woman, but is really talkin' 'bout the shots he's taken. And throughout the song, he potrays liquor as a woman, CLEVER!!! It'll go over people's heads, and some people will think he's jus talkin' 'bout a women of course, so I guess Atlantic thought it was safe enough to put on the CD. Sounds like a club banger, but it's more to it of course, lol. Gotta love hip-hop sometimes.
Now, Flo Rida can rap his ass off, but since I've been listenin' to 'em, he's suffered from that dope-boy trend, cuz he claims to have done the shit too. So I wasn't surprised to hear some songs like this on here. But Flo Rida has a new problem since he's gotten on Atlantic.... THIS NIGGA WON'T GET OUT THE CLUB! SOMEBODY GET THEM FLORIDA BOYS OUT THE CLUB! Since he's VIP with T-Pain, he's pretty much invited himself back to the club every night the doors open on most of these songs on this album. I mean, I can't lie, some of tha songs are hittin', some of 'em ain't hittin' on shit. But hey what do I know, I ain't think to much of "Low," but you see how well it's doin'. He even slows it down for the club with Trey Songs on "Freaky Deaky."
Now Flo Rida has no flaws in his flow, so we're gonna skip that criticism. Other than the subject matter in the songs, he's not really talkin' 'bout nuthin'.. I mean, it sounds coo', but he ain't talkin' 'bout nuthin'. (Kinda like Lil' Wayne.) And Flo Rida, you're a brand new artist. Why why why do you have 10 features and you only have 14 songs! It's your debut, people are suppose to hear YOU!! Not see who you got on ya album mayne! C'mon! You can rap! Stop bein' a Young Joc! Cuz nobody's outshinin' him on the featured songs, nobody. And the hooks ain't hittin' on much on these songs either.
Well, to sum it all up, like I say, the kid can rap. He jus ain't talkin' 'bout nuthin', n he has way to many features. All the songs are gonna have people lookin' at 'em more of a bubble-gum rapper, when he's not. But that's what happens sometimes when you stay in the club to much. I hope other-wise, cuz he's talented. "Ms. Hangover" shows that, coo' concept, no guest spot, why couldn't the majority of the album be like this?! Hope he does better next-go-round

Basically they stalked Ruskell and Holmgren after a practice and asked about Alexander, and all they said is "He has not been cut today."
Which means he will be cut by June 1st so that his 6.something bonus' would be spread over the next two years instead of just this year, allowing us to pick someone up for this year.

Juelz Santana Arrested for Excessive Jolly Ranchers
Oh and he also had some Pot and Hollow Tip Bullets in his car (Bentley), Which he was driving with a suspended license.
Santana, who was born in Harlem, also had a hand-rolled cigar laced with marijuana in his shoe, cops said.
In the trunk, police said they found 29 hollow-point bullets wrapped in a sock and $19,500 rolled in small bundles and hidden in a plastic bag filled with "hundreds of Jolly Rancher" candies.
Police also found a plastic sandwich bag of marijuana in the backseat of the cruiser, where Santana had been sitting after he was arrested.
He is expected to appear in court today.
