How original is Kanye?? All Of Kanye's Samples

Now..  Before I post this video.  I'd like to ask a few questions, because some of these samples I didn't know he basically re-did the beat from.  I just thought he mostly had voice samples, but the video shows he takes the beats too.

Now, I remember some years ago, when Murder Inc. was on top, and I was gettin' on Irv Gotti's ass for takin' old rap beats and re-doin' them.  Now Dr. Dre did some of this, but..  Dr. Dre only took peices for his song, not just throw in some extra kicks, snares, his, n 808s.  I mean some shit that's really really really really tight, are actually pretty old.  So, with damn near every beat you've heard Kanye do, is basically some old song with a few more tinks added it.  The part we credit him for the most (cuz I surely don't think he's a great rapper,) he actually hasn't masterminded it.  Not sayin' he's not capable for doin' some tight beats, because the "Workout Plan," or beats like that "B Alright" (Trina n Ludacris), track he did isn't on there.  But should he get the credit he deserves?

Sample of the Week!

Since I won't be around a computer Friday (The normal SOTW day) and because I just can't keep it in. I'm posting this one early. Leave some feedback in the comments. Good choice for Sample of the Week? Does the song bring back a memory?

Sample of the Week!

Here's the deal:

Your homie and mine, JAY SMART, Found a really cool blog that is completely dedicated to cool hip-hop soul samples. If you don't check the "Bomb Site Links" portion every so often, we are gradually adding more and more. So we all had a meeting and decided in the best interest of not promising more than we can deliver, that Sample of the Day, should be Sample of the Week.

With that said, Let's go:

P.S. Some fun Sample trivia for you. I might have been mistaken when I said that Audio Two's Top Billin had the most samples ever in Hip-Hop. Technically, as far as the beat and the whole thing, it could be. However, in this mixtape, Lyn Collin's "Think (About it)" is the original source of that "WOO! YEAH!" James Brown Sample that pops up in EVERY GOD DAMN SONG. (The Lyn Collins song was written and produced by Mr. Brown) Just for fun, I went and found a list. Check it out HERE.

Sample Of The Day!

I was doing the random selection on my entire itunes library over the weekend and Pattii Labelle came up. Plus the big bosses are gone for the week, I figured it was an opportune time to jump start the Sample of the Day with a double feature. Miss me?

Biter: Nelly ft Kelly Rowland - Dillema

Biter #2: Outkast - Ghettomusick (could only find an instrumental on imeem, so ur stuck with the video)

Sorry for missing yesterday. Today, I'm gonna double you up, and drop some knowledge.

Biter: Juicy - Notorious B.I.G.

Produced by Puffy for BIG. However, PETE ROCK swears on his life that Puffy jacked it from him. Here's the story from Wax Poetics:

I did the original version, didn't get credit for it. They came to my house, heard the beat going on the drum machine, it's the same story. You come downstairs at my crib, you hear music. He heard that **** and the next thing you know it comes out. They had me do a remix, but I tell people, and I will fight it to the end, that I did the original version of that. I'm not mad at anybody, I just want the correct credit.

But he also tells the same story for Tribe's "All That Jazz" too, So either dude is bitter about lot's of stuff, or just needs to stop playin records when people come over. We'll never know for sure.

Writer: Juicy Fruit - Mtume

Okay, now here's where I double it up and give you the lesser known biter:

Biter #2: The Ave- Dre Dog

There's only a 30 second clip available on Imeem, however, on youtube they have the full video, so check that if you wanna take a trip down memory lane.

I wanted to come through and actually drop some bombs today for the SOTD. Most people might have heard the last two, so I thought I'd go more obscure. I admit willingly when it comes to the Jay-Z vs Nas debate I easily favor Jay. However, Nas created one of my favorite songs ever in "I Can." When you can make a song for top 40 and parents ALSO love it? Success. McClarron. Haha!

Biter: Nas - "I Can"

Writer: "Impeach The President" - The Honeydrippers

Also sampled was Beethoven's Für Elise

Sample Of The Day

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

One of my favorite things is being somewhere random and hearing a song come on that sounds familiar but not all the way. Then I recognize that it's a sample from a well known song. I suppose everything is easily looked up from Wikipedia these days, but that's kind of cheating.

So from now on, I'm gonna try to do this every day that I remember.

Since it's the first day, we'll do two.

This one, I was sitting at work listening to Pandora. (Sidebar - If you haven't heard about or visited Pandora.com, do that. It's DOPE!) and this song popped on. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out where I knew it from.

Biter: Ice Cube - Today was a good day (remix)

Writer: Blackgirl - Let's do it Again

----

Bonus Round:

This one's just easy. There's got to be some sort of statistics on this, but this HAS to be the top sampled song in history. I only post it because Mike and I quote this song every day. People look at us funny. BUT I GET THE PAPER SO I DON'T CARE! Lol. See what I mean?

Onward-

Biter(s): This list is endless, but I'll stick with the most obvious recent one. (Maybe I'll add a new song that samples this song every day too. lol. That would be an accomplishment. I guarantee I've got a song to last a few weeks at least)

50 Cent- I Get Money

Writer: Top Billin - Audio Two
